A Day at the Beach - Basic Safety Tips

!±8± A Day at the Beach - Basic Safety Tips

Summer is here, time for people to start heading to the beach and enjoying a day on the sand. Here are some basic safety tips to keep you and your family safe on your day at the beach:

Protect Your Skin

Sunscreen is a must for everyone at the beach. Look for the highest SPF rating for maximum protection. You may also consider sunscreen that has extra moisturizing ingredients so that your skin does not dry out.

Avoid Overheating

Try to avoid laying in the direct sun for too long, you may start to overheat and get signs of heat stroke. If you start to feel dizzy or ill at all, get help immediately. Make sure to learn the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion so that you can take action quickly. Avoid falling asleep in the sun, it can be quite dangerous. Consider taking an umbrella to the beach and laying under that. An umbrella will protect you the best from the sun's rays, keeping you out of them altogether. Also, consider wearing special clothing that is designed to reflect the sun's rays. This type of clothing usually is white and has an SPF rating. A hat is also a must to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your face. Many people have very sensitive facial skin and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can result in more freckles, skin peeling, redness or a severe burn.

Protect Your Eyes

The sun at the beach will be extra strong, due to the reflection off the sand and the water, so it is essential to wear sunglasses that have strong UV protection at all times. It can also protect your eyes from glare and flying objects like a frisbee, sand or balls.

Going in the Water

If you are not a strong swimmer, stay in shallow water. If you prefer to go farther out in the water, make sure you stay with a partner. You should avoid drinking alcohol when you plan to go swimming, alcohol consumption can slow down your actions and response time in the water.

Make sure to swim in an area that has a lifeguard station with a lifeguard on duty. A lifeguard should be keeping watch on your section of the beach at all times. Lifeguards are skilled swimmers, knowing all first aid and emergency methods; they can be life savers at a time of emergency. If a lifeguard gives you an instruction, make sure to listen to him or her as they are there to protect you.

Keep Children Safe

Families often bring children to the beach, and it is absolutely crucial that they are watched and chaperoned at all times. Children can run into the water and get caught in a wave all too easily. It is your responsibility to make sure they are safe, even if a lifeguard is on duty in that area.

Items to Bring

Items that can make your day at the beach more comfortable include towels or blankets to lay on, a cooler with plenty of cold drinks, food, a trash bag for you to keep your trash and a cell phone in case of emergency. Many people also enjoy reading a book or listening to music at the beach.

How Water Aerobics Can Help Burn Calories

!±8± How Water Aerobics Can Help Burn Calories

More people are turning to water aerobics as a way to safely and effectively lose weight. This isn't surprising: Not only do water aerobics provide an intense workout, they, like all exercises performed in water, place less pressure on people's joints.

In water aerobics, students perform traditional aerobic exercises, everything from jumping jacks to running to various stretches, while in shallow water. When performing aerobic exercises in water, participants also benefit from the increased resistance that water provides. Basically, water aerobics allows participants to burn more calories in a lesser amount of time. The reason is simple: When you run in water, you're working harder than when you run on land. Water aerobics can assist a vast array of people; however, this form of exercise is an especially good fit for anyone recovering from an injury or who finds that traditional exercises place too much strain on their bones and joints.

Because of the support provided by the water, aerobic exercises place far less stress or pressure on bones and joints than they do when participants perform them on land. People have a greater chance of hurting their ankles or knees when they perform five sets of 30 jumping jacks on land. When they do the same exercises in a pool of water, the pressure they're placing on their ankles and knees is greatly reduced. Water aerobics is a great way for people to experience the benefits of these exercises without also suffering from the potential dangers of them. Today, most gyms or health clubs offer regularly scheduled water aerobic classes in an effort to promote a healthier lifestyle for women and men of all ages.

Participants rarely need more than the proper swimsuit, some goggles and, if desired, water shoes in order to engage in this activity. Class organizers will usually provide flotation devices, weights and any other equipment that can help participants to gain the most from their workouts and to burn unwanted calories.

Choosing the right swimsuit is a relatively easy decision. Participants should make sure that their swimsuits are comfortable and loose-fitting enough to allow for a wide range of motion. Investing in chlorine resistant swim wear is a logical choice for dedicated aerobic students. Many pools in health clubs, fitness centers and recreation areas contain extremely high levels of chlorine, so purchasing chorine resistant swim wear will allow participants to exercise in their favorite swimsuits for longer periods of time. Some students might choose plus size swimwear. It's important for swim wear to not be overly tight so that participants are not restricted during their workouts. Further, plus size swim wear will allow participants to freely move their arms and legs as they exercise.

People aiming to lose weight and place as little stress on their bodies while doing so should try out a water aerobics class. By running, jumping and stretching against the resistance of water, people will burn more calories in less time. With all these benefits, it's little wonder that water aerobics is becoming the weight-loss and strength-building method of choice for so many individuals.

Provides the same high quality sound and features as the FINIS SwiMP3 v2 Waterproof MP3 player with an upgraded processor and memory (1 GB). Unlike standard waterproof MP3 players--which transmit sound through the air or water and produce only a muffled noise when submerged--the SwiMP3.1G relies on your bones to conduct the sound. This direct transfer of sound vibrations from the cheekbone to the inner ear produces exceptional sound clarity, so you can listen to all of your favorite tunes while working out or taking a leisurely swim. And you needn't worry about damaging your hearing, as bone conduction hearing is a safe, well-established hearing mechanism in humans. Rather, this is the first time an audio company has leveraged the technology to enhance the experience of swimmers, tri-athletes, surfers, synchronized swimmers, and anyone else involved in general water activities.

Prescription Swim Goggles

!±8± Prescription Swim Goggles

Prescription swim goggles protects the eyes from ailments such as eye infection, cornea inflation, pink eye, lumps inside the eye, seeing colored circles around the eye and other related diseases which might result in temporary, distorted or permanent blindness. These disorders or diseases are usually caused by excess exposure of the eye to chlorine. The silicon based prescription swim goggles are especially created to shield the eyes from chlorine usually come in different variants of tinted lenses which also protects the eyes from the UV rays and sun rays when swimming outdoors.

They are basically responsible for letting you see things clearly underwater without having to wear goggles over lenses or glasses. Wearing goggles over glasses leads to imbalance in the positioning of the goggles which leads to the water seeping into the goggles thereby not letting you see anything clearly. Most of the people prefer wearing lenses under their goggles to see things clearly. But this actually ends up affecting the eyes drastically. The lenses might come off if by chance water comes inside the goggles and also causes infection because of the bacteria and other microorganisms which gets stuck to the lenses.

Given below are a few things which should be considered while buying prescription swim goggles:

· Lenses: The prescription swim goggles should be brought to prescription. Buying random prescription swim goggles will end up distorting your vision even more underwater. There are two types of prescription swim goggles available, step diopter and custom goggles. Step diopter goggles are standard goggles manufactured by various companies with preset prescriptions. A person buys a goggle the closest to his own prescription. These goggles are OK for people who have below -8.00 powers or have astigmatism over -1.00. Even though a person can see better underwater with these goggles, but cannot achieve perfect vision. It is advised to choose a goggle with a lesser power than the prescribed power of the eyes.

Custom goggles on the other hand are made to the exact specifications and prescription and is designed to fit you perfectly too. Mostly people with powers above -8.00 use the custom prescription goggles. The lenses should tinted accordingly to protect the eyes from UV rays when swimming outdoors. The rubber band of the prescription swim goggles should be nicely sealed. The band should fit perfectly on the bone around the eyes around the eyes to protect the eyes from the water seeping in.
